Ever since Sony revealed it was engaged on a solo film for Madame Web, people have had questions. Why her? How is that this going to connect with whichever Spider-Man is swinging round now?
If you happen to’ve watched the trailer, one of many questions could also be when this film is about. Superhero films usually maintain issues within the relative current, however Entertainment Weekly’s latest preview notes that Madame Net is about in 2003. That successfully makes it the primary interval piece Spider-Man film we’ve ever gotten, and the primary mainstream superhero flick since 2020’s Marvel Girl 1984 to be set within the relative previous. (What’s it with women-led superhero films being set two or three a long time in the past?) And that is apparently a unique 2003 than the one all of us lived by: at one level within the trailer, we see a New Yorker taking part in what’s clearly a PSP, which didn’t come out till 2005.
Why 2003? In response to leisure reporter Jeff Sneider, that’s a reshoots selection. The movie was initially set within the 90s, the place we’d be taught this was set on the earth of the Andrew Garfield-led Wonderful Spider-Man films. However Sneider claims Sony then determined to alter to over to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, then axed the 90s out of the movie fully upon realizing the timelines didn’t match up. If true, it paints the movie’s existence in a fair weirder gentle than earlier than. Adam Scott’s rumored to be taking part in a younger Ben Parker, and he will not be the one means we be taught which universe that is set in. Both means, it’s most likely going to be a bit clunky, as a result of Sony’s method to worldbuilding in these films is…well, y’know.
Madame Net releases in theaters on February 14.
